My route into journalism? Comp school, state sixth form college, writing for the uni paper while at Oxford, work experience at the Times while I stayed in a squat, journalism college, a year on a local newspaper in East End of London on £9k... Yep, privileged all the way. https://twitter.com/owenjones84/status/987229001151369216 …

I'd say going to Oxford in what, the eighties, when only 10% or so of all kids even went to ANY university, is in itself quite privileged. I'd imagine you made a few 'contacts' there who came in handy somewhere down the line.

I didn’t go to Oxford because I was privileged. I went to Oxford because I was clever.

What’s immodest about explaining that simple fact? If I wasn’t from a privileged background & went to a comp but still got the grades to get into Oxford, why do YOU think I got in? Do tell. I remember when Labour was a party of aspiration...

Our son went to Oxford from a comp but has the humility to realise there are different types of intelligence

When did I suggest there was only one type of intelligence? My husband and two best friends all left their comp schools at 16. All three very clever. What was the point you thought you were making?

Thelma, Julia is a thoroughly horrible person with vile views. She just wants to be famous. She is best ignored.
