If there were thousands of grammar schools they couldn’t be very selective about their intake, could they.

Yes. Some countries currently have no grammars at all.
-
Do you mean counties? What do you think would be the optimum ratio between grammars and secondary moderns?
-
Yes, sorry, I did. It depends if grammars are catering to top 1% or 5% or 10%...
-
Well a bit of research shows ~150 grammars out of ~3000 state secondaries in England, which roughly works out at 5%. But the counties with grammars are weirdly skewed. In Bucks more that 1/3 schools are grammars.

still selective?

There are currently 163 grammars and 3,000 comps. So, yes.

Yes! Let's just make all schools grammar schools, huh? Can you even hear yourself?
-
Do you need some help with basic understanding?
-
No. I went to a grammar school so I'm ok thanks. (From experience I know all too well the falsity of the claims that such schools aid social mobility.)

Precisely, Julia. I'm a proud Grammar School alumni. Went in 1999-2005 (incl. 6th Form)... I'm astounded as to how many people who claim to be for Social Mobility are happy with the status quo and rally against the expansion of Selective Grammars. It's an embarrassment

We have grammars in Kent which are dominated by the middle classes to pay tutors to cram their kids through the Kent test. The grammars are very good schools. The Sec Mids are some of the worst performing schools in country.

I & my siblings were sent to a private primary school in the '60s by our middle-class privately-educated parents because they knew we’d be crammed to pass the 11+ and get into good grammars. The private primary had pretty much a 100% record at 11+. 1/2

My grammar was v. middle-class at a time when >20% went to grammars in our area.

Exactly. And if so undesireable why do people compete to get in them anyway? Perhaps we should have more of them so more people can get in?
