We have them in NI still and there are still very few working class kids getting into those very same spots here.https://twitter.com/JuliaHB1/status/988125379360587777 …

If you’re *genuinely* angry about how few working class kids get into top universities & top professions, as I am, then you should support the expansion of grammar schools so poorer kids can get the high quality academic education they need to get into those institutions.

Interesting. I’ve seen research suggesting that NI schools deliver the best results across the board. Which is in stark contrast to what anti-grammar campaigners claim would happen in England.

We do, but we also have one of the biggest gaps between those doing well and those who do not. Then again councils have a much bigger role in education in England than they do here in NI.

Direct rule ministers have no comprehension of the idea of a working class grammar school. I went to one.

Many of them do great work, some of my mates were given great opportunities, but then again I went to a Catholic non grammar that really helped me move on and move up. A lot of folks here still fall through the cracks though.

Do you mind me asking if your opportunities also depended on your parent's ability to fund some living expenses? I just have this feeling that opportunity is more aligned with your finances than your school.... Certainly is that way here in Ireland.

I was the first in my family to make it to Uni. My Mum in 2007 couldn't have afforded to pay for it herself. I was lucky enough to get student loans etc to get me through so it worked out.

Fair play! The grammar school /loan combi seems to work out then? Is it still doable, cos I know things have changed in Ireland in the last 20 years that way. Aren't UK colleges horrendously expensive these days?

I didn't go to a grammar school, I went to a non selective Catholic school. The NI Executive didn't follow the British govt policy of £9k fees.

Ooh, that was great! And yeah sorry.. Forgot I'd already read where you went to school. Our fees here in ROI are becoming more prohibitive, but they'd still be feasible. It's the housing that really makes education a class issue here 😢

Interesting. The head of one of the top performing grammar schools in NI admitted to me that there is a considerable amount of tutoring (external) going on. I've heard the same story via a teacher in one of the other top ten. Reminds me of 1 to 1 at public schools. Money talks.
