My route into journalism? Comp school, state sixth form college, writing for the uni paper while at Oxford, work experience at the Times while I stayed in a squat, journalism college, a year on a local newspaper in East End of London on £9k... Yep, privileged all the way. https://twitter.com/owenjones84/status/987229001151369216 …

I'd say going to Oxford in what, the eighties, when only 10% or so of all kids even went to ANY university, is in itself quite privileged. I'd imagine you made a few 'contacts' there who came in handy somewhere down the line.

I didn’t go to Oxford because I was privileged. I went to Oxford because I was clever.

I went to Oxford. I don't describe myself as intelligent, but as someone who was fortunate to be given opportunities which meant I could apply. I know many intelligent people who had far less opportunities than me and never went to Uni. Education does not dictate intelligence.

Then I would suggest you’re not very intelligent. I know plenty of VERY clever people who didn’t go to Oxbridge or to uni at all. But almost all of the people I met at Oxford were very clever, regardless of their educational background.

I believe I was lucky to be given opportunities and the tutors kind enough to give me a chance. I am a teacher so I'm not stupid. Holding a different opinion to you does not mean I am any less or more intelligent tbh

I didn’t say that it did, did I? I think not recognising one’s own intelligence is pretty dumb. I went to a camp but I didn’t need extra help from my tutors. Really not sure what your problem is with me saying I got into a good uni because of my own brains not my family.

You got into oxford because you are conventionally intelligent, yes absolutely. What you’re failing to understand is that privilege did play a part in you going to Oxford. You paid the tuition, I doubt a person of colour from a council estate would have the same opportunities

Ok, first, tuition fees at Oxford are the same as any other uni. Second, I didn’t pay any fees because I’m REALLY old and there weren’t fees then. Third, I had a full maintenance grant & waitressed every holiday while I was at uni to pay my way.
