My route into journalism? Comp school, state sixth form college, writing for the uni paper while at Oxford, work experience at the Times while I stayed in a squat, journalism college, a year on a local newspaper in East End of London on £9k... Yep, privileged all the way. https://twitter.com/owenjones84/status/987229001151369216 …

Haha apparently not! Sorry ... carry on with the meritocracy bashing

Personally I know a young man who passed out of a prestigious public school even after being expelled. He was let back in to "graduate". Why? Because daddy paid for the school to build a theatre. Named after him. Proving money talks & gets access to places poor people can't go.
-
So that one off scenario should clearly be used to judge all the tens of thousands of graduates who pass through Oxford and Cambridge every year ...
-
Not one off though, recently we heard about Toby Young and his father's interventions. I don't think his case will be totally unique, do you?
-
And yet there are thousands of people like me who had zero money and connections and then are constantly having our achievements downgraded with a broad brush! It’s just such a lazy argument and an outdated sterotype and so frustrating when the colleges have outreach programmes!
-
Zero money? Really... Yes, I know people who made it to Oxbridge from the local comp. Yet somehow there are way more that make it from fee paying schools. What could be making the difference? Hmm

Better schools, don’t pretend otherwise

So many wealthy, priviliged types claiming to be victims of a mythical leftist conspiracy. Could be that you just not nice.
-
Not sure if that was target at me or Julia, or both - but I never once mentioned my politics, and if you’d read the tweet you were replying to, I made very clear I’m not wealthy. ‘You just not nice’ - what a metered, well thought out argument!

Sorry was meant to be directed

But too stupid to realise it’s not about individuals it’s the whole picture. Are the majority of Oxbridge students privileged. Private schooling ? Or is it just a coincidence that rich people going to private schools generally do better ? Maybe they are just smarter.
