My route into journalism? Comp school, state sixth form college, writing for the uni paper while at Oxford, work experience at the Times while I stayed in a squat, journalism college, a year on a local newspaper in East End of London on £9k... Yep, privileged all the way. https://twitter.com/owenjones84/status/987229001151369216 …

Our son went to Oxford from a comp but has the humility to realise there are different types of intelligence
-
When did I suggest there was only one type of intelligence? My husband and two best friends all left their comp schools at 16. All three very clever. What was the point you thought you were making?

Thelma, Julia is a thoroughly horrible person with vile views. She just wants to be famous. She is best ignored.

You seem really nice though.

Just calling it as I see it.

Very true. It's all about identity now & victimhood in the liebour party.

Not immodest, just a simple boast; stating categorically that the only reason you got to Oxford (Kudos by the way) was because you are 'clever' is an extremely disingenuous & simplistic take on what can be a difficult & complicated social equation for some people.

Lol you're educated in some areas but you're lacking in emotional intelligence

Oh god I hate hearing tories use the word ‘aspiration’! For them, aspiration means leaving others behind and moving out of your social class. What about aspiring to have a living wage, decent working conditions, a house you can afford, a good local school for your children, etc?

Intelligence is not a simple fact. And as a matter of upbringing I was always taught not to blow my own trumpet. Did you parents not teach you that? It is a basic tenet of civilised behaviour, and as a Little Englander I would have thought that it would be second nature to you.

Thankfully we are back to Labour being a party for workers. A party to support those who are vulnerable, a party who puts people before business, a party who aspires to ensure all citizens have access to health care and brilliant education rather than ‘me, me, me attitude’..

I remember when journalists reported the truth and not what their paymasters told them to report!

I know of people from North, where I live, attended Oxbridge from comprehensive and felt very uncomfortable there. Wrong accents, didn't fit in etc. Course, you'll say that was their fault.

But *you were* from a relatively privileged background, just cos you went to a comp doesn't negate that. I can accept based on getting into Oxford you were quite smart, though I see no evidence of that nowadays.

I remember when being conservative meant having some compassion for others less fortunate...... Seems that's no longer relevant.

If you'd said you'd got good grades, that would have been modest. Saying you were clever is immodest. You should know the difference.
