My route into journalism? Comp school, state sixth form college, writing for the uni paper while at Oxford, work experience at the Times while I stayed in a squat, journalism college, a year on a local newspaper in East End of London on £9k... Yep, privileged all the way. https://twitter.com/owenjones84/status/987229001151369216 …

Julia, if you had grown up on an inner city estate you would not have gotten in to Oxbridge. No matter how educated you were. Education alone does not guarantee access. Your background carries a lot of weight.
-
There are some amazing schools doing just that for kids from those backgrounds right now. But yes, of course being a middle class kid makes it FAR easier. But that isn’t the same as being “privileged” in the way that was originally being implied.
-
Lol, that’s almost the dictionary definition of privilege.
-
“I’m not privileged, things are just easier for me because of my background”
-
I refer you back to the original context of this Twitter exchange.
-
Given that tens of millions of Britons are middle class, that’s a hell of a lot of privileged people.
-
Yes, it is. Your point being?
-
On that definition, more than half the population is privileged. Anyone whose parents aren’t penniless alcoholics is privileged by comparison to those whose parents are. We all live on a spectrum. Your definition is dumb.

You got into oxford because you are conventionally intelligent, yes absolutely. What you’re failing to understand is that privilege did play a part in you going to Oxford. You paid the tuition, I doubt a person of colour from a council estate would have the same opportunities
-
Ok, first, tuition fees at Oxford are the same as any other uni. Second, I didn’t pay any fees because I’m REALLY old and there weren’t fees then. Third, I had a full maintenance grant & waitressed every holiday while I was at uni to pay my way.

Because you are failing to see the opportunities that enabled you to have your education- by where you were born and who you were born to and the education that allowed your brains to develop. Right leaning brains are structured not to see this
-
What opportunities? The bog standard comp I went to? Or the non-selective state sixth form college?

You clearly did say that. Your superior intellect evidently leads you to believe that you can change tack when challenged and come out unscathed. Which ironically makes you an unprincipled and unreliable human. What a waste of intelligence!

"then I would suggest you're not very intelligent" - yes, I think you did say that, didn't you?
