Saw a parishioner just out of hospital. There he talked to a staff nurse with fifteen years experience, a single mum of two, full time on nights, who depends on food banks to feed her family. FOOD BANKS.

@RevRichardColes If a nurse earning c£30k a year has to rely on a foodbank to feed her kids, how do all the millions of other families on the same or lower incomes manage to make ends meet, which they clearly do?

In my experience it is single parenthood which impoverishes people in work - and demands from debt or costs associated with family breakdown. It is not that unusual, I’m afraid.

Well then in that case no other variables can exist. Tell me Julia have you ever thought about working in scientific research? Your ability to come to conclusions without aggregate data could really speed things up in that field

I'd agree with all of this except her solutions sounding good. We are currently burdened with commentators that have no qualifications in things like economics, but don't feel that should stop them talking about them as if they did.

Nurses have had a significant real pay cut Julia, hence it could very much be her pay. She could have budgeted fine a few years ago but the government's refusal to stop cutting her pay year on year can affect even the most frugal nurse.

I know there’s been a real terms pay cut for nurses but that’s also the case for millions of others in the public AND private sector. So why is she using foodbanks and they aren’t?

Many are Julia. Are you suggesting that although she may have been financially sound a few years ago, she should have prepared for a decade of wage cuts as a nurse *just in case*? There are also multitude of other factors you don't know about so shouldn't judge.

The idea that everyone should have enough spare cash to survive real pay cuts year on year almost indefinitely is one that is particularly detached from the real world of working class life.

Yep, the squeeze on standard of living of working class people has left millions on the edge of crisis. Yet the commentators and political pundits are all comfortably middle class so have no idea about the real world.

Nurses are also leaving the profession in large numbers because of the squeeze on wages and living standards. It's good that Julia's friend is coping well but the numbers show it's not the standard, particularly in places where housing is more expensive.
