Dear Julia Hartley Brewer: Please reconsider your rhetoric when referring to 'good for nothing' parents. They were once children too, and we have no idea what they may have went through.https://www.scotsman.com/news/opinion/darren-mcgarvey-what-you-need-to-know-about-work-shy-scroungers-1-4717296 …

Absolutely those parents have often been failed by THEIR parents, but that still doesn’t mean this is a problem caused by Tory cuts, as opposed to a failure of parenting, does it?

Did you even read the article? Tory cuts cause failure in parenting. It also removes those services that provide the safety net those kids need to catch them when parenting does fail. And this 'f√ck you I'm alright' attitude is so typically Tory + its gut wrenchingly sickening

Not saying that doesn't apply to a lot of folk. Just that describing parents generally as 'good for nothing' is a kind of verminsation of the poor. Not only is it mean-spirited, it's not rooted in anything but stereotype. She's all dogma, hyperbole.

Sorry but most of the hyperbole comes from the Left! There’s no doubt there are instances of bad parenting that result in poor outcomes for kids & That’s not restricted to the poor! Parents need to take responsibility for kids! Govts do not kill people! Bad lifestyle choices do!

Yeah, just wrote a book about it. Well aware responsibility lies with parents. But it would help if we understood what factors can impair one's ability to parent. It's often people with no experience of hardship who like to talk tough about what other folk ought to do.

I suppose it’s about whether you’re interested in blame or not. If you’re looking to point the finger then yeah, you can point at the parents and yeah, you could point at the current government. Doesn’t move anything on though. Judging and blaming adds nothing.

The problems we have go back to the 60s. Dysfunctional family units have been allowed to grow at a greater rate than the rest of society and we are now on a 3rd generation of them and we wonder why. We've paid people to stay at home and breed.

If a child goes to school hungry it's the parents fault, not the State. Food in UK has never been cheaper. It should be priority no.1 to put food on the table - not fags, not booze. Bad parenting - end of story.

I had a really tough upbringing . But no way would I let that influence me in bringing up my children I'd go to the ends of the earth to make sure they weren't hungry. I'd certainly give up phones & TVs cigarettes etc to make sure they were fed and clothed.
