Completely agree. I can't quite believe this tennis match happened. What the hell did they think they were doing?? In finance any unexplained wealth investigation would flag this as a huge risk - for elected representatives it should have been impossible.

You’d just get the donations coming in via different forms. Better to allow it and have it monitored than to ban it and have it happen through hidden channels
-
Nope, could stop this if enough political will to do it. Limit to company and individual donations.
-
But you’ve seen enough political dramas to know you can never stamp it out. It’s not perfect but it’s a far more transparent model to have Boris admit it and have one lump sum (honest) than to have it be legitimatelydenied and go through offshore accounts and holding companies.

What will happen is that this will prompt the creation of political action committees which will be used to funnel the finds, either from unions or wealthy donors.
-
We can’t stop those too
-
The challenge is that people do not make large political donations out of the *kindness of their hearts*, or to perpetuate democratic discourse. People, by their nature, expect something in return for their money, and not just being invited to socialise with a senior politician.

You're falling into the trap of some British citizens can take part in political life and others can't. And the state funding of political parties which is an assured route away from true democracy when you have the likes of Common Purpose running everything.
#BigPicture -
No, happy for any citizen to take part - Russian born or not- I just don’t approve of big money donations from anyone. Distorts our democracy.
-
But so would state funding. If we want those that run the state behind the scenes, with their 5th columnist agenda via Common Purpose alumni, then that'd be vastly worse as an outcome. If the parties all start going bankrupt, the tax payer will pay.

And we should stop ALL donations from non-British donors and overseas residents whether British or not (including from rich Russians to the Conservative Party).

Anyone want to talk about tax funded political parties?

But don't forget union funding of Labour makes an asymmetric starting point for any restrictions.

This is the slow relentless return of feudalism albeit "democratic" feudalism. That is why it stinks! It's the same reason Brexit is right coz in time we can, as a Nation change our State but as 1 of 28 there would be no way of resisting the march of this new hegemony in the EU.

Agree. Plus £30k for meet with Defence Secretary. Even if it isn’t dodgy it sounds it. If Corbyn has done either what would be press reaction? The rules for funding need to change now and as you say be restricted to £5k per person / firm. And no cash for these events ever again
