I usually agree with you on most things Julia but this is just tradition and I think a charming one - like asking the bride’s father for her hand

I think that’s yucky too. If my hubby had asked my dad, my dad would have laughed in his face. And I’d have refused to marry him!
-
Poor man could have dodged a bullet there then ?

Diana was not legally allowed to take her two sons out of the country without her ex mother-in-law’s permission. Does that sound like “only ceremonial” to you?
-
Would that have something to do with one of those said sons being heir to the throne? Of course she would've needed permission.

No place for Monarchy altogether in the 21st century
-
But there clearly is for power-crazed, corrupt, lying politicians, who will become our head of state instead of the Queen? I'd take her and 2000 years of history & tradition over a politician ANY DAY.

I think it's a wonderful tradition. In a world of uncertainty and where everyone is offended by the slightest word or action, a little bit of continuity from the Royal family is somewhat reassuring.

Well MB I'm old fashioned but I asked my (ex
) wife's parents permission first. It's more to know the rest of your marriage won't be spent on egg shells everytime an in law is around. Also imo manners - End of conversation
