There are very specific reasons why Germany trades so much with China - their long standing strong manufacturing base, value of the Euro (thanks to less successful Mediterranean Euro economies), the deliberate stifling of consumer debt so lower demand at home, etc

But it is also the case that the UK shouldn't have to leave the EU to trade more with China

Of course it doesn’t. But the UK does need to leave the EU to have a free trade deal with China. Germany and the UK export different things.

So do you have an example of what is possible? To contextualise @bengoldacre's EU example and offer concrete grounds for post Brexit optimism on the China free trade deal front?

We just want free trade. Forget the trade deals. They are protectionist anyway, same as EU.

This kind of simplistic message helps Brexit sound superficially attractive to many, but it won't help deliver actual policies or results.

According to @JuliaHB1, because the UK and Germany have different exports. While that is true, I'd like to learn how and why leaving the EU will help UK exports to China.

Interestingly none of these countries have said they want to increase trade with us when we leave the EU. China didn't comment (which is their general policy with all countries) and US, Japan & India all said we are a less attractive trading partner after Brexit

They are not opposed to a few new trade deals but they’ve made it clear a big part of our appeal for trade was our membership in the EU. It gives them access to a much bigger market.
