This is what Twitter trolls have done to one of our most esteemed academics. Shame on you.https://twitter.com/wmarybeard/status/965003428144574465 …

Well, first I’d say that Twitter isn’t a platform that naturally lends itself to nuance & context. But even being charitable, when you go into bat to defend ‘alleged’ misdeeds that have already been effectively admitted, it isn’t really a good look
-
And, frankly, it’s still an awful take. Offering solace to those who do awful things in extremis is incredibly demeaning to the vast majority who do not.

She didn’t.

She really did. These were to two tweets she sent - the ‘allegedly’ problem, and then the pseudo-justification.pic.twitter.com/JMS0yuL7cQ

It’s a soft-justification, and one that deserves a firm response. First because it Oxfam have failed to meet the expectations of its donors, and second because it demeans the vast majority who do NOT act in the fashion she is seeking justification for.

I say this as someone who has a huge degree of respsect for Mary Beard. But I’m sorry, I also know that you can recognise a disingenuous appeal for ‘nuance & balance’, when it’s made with ulterior motives.

The amount of people that have misunderstood her tweets amazes me. She was no way condoning anyone’s action but simply offering a possible explanation why people behave in such away. Unless you have been in these countries where society has broken down, you really can't comment.
