This is what Twitter trolls have done to one of our most esteemed academics. Shame on you.https://twitter.com/wmarybeard/status/965003428144574465 …

Twitter is just such a medium. If you’re high profile, and wade in wish at such a controversial opinion, you’re going to get both barrels & all the rest.

Her opinion was, frankly, awful. And if you stick it out there, in the public domain, you’ll get a huge amount of feedback, good & bad.

No, her opinion was nuanced and contextual. If that makes it too complicated for some people, maybe they should do a bit more reading.

Well, first I’d say that Twitter isn’t a platform that naturally lends itself to nuance & context. But even being charitable, when you go into bat to defend ‘alleged’ misdeeds that have already been effectively admitted, it isn’t really a good look

And, frankly, it’s still an awful take. Offering solace to those who do awful things in extremis is incredibly demeaning to the vast majority who do not.

Do you know how many people are @InLimboBrexit , Julia? How many of our European friends are abused in the streets, on social media day in day out? David Lammy gets a tweet telling him to go back to Africa and death threats. Where is your outrage for them?

Who suggested that was acceptable? Are you outraged by everything bad that happens in the world every moment of every day? How exhausting.

Mary said some rather silly stuff about the Oxfam scandal. She doesn't deserve to be trolled but she did deserve to be pulled up over it.

Absolutely. Twitter is a medium where we can share differing opinions. The problem is when passionately held views - even when one party seems them offensive - aren’t debated with courtesy and then just descend into abuse.

It's not good but it's a fact of life on social media. I've been at the receiving end of plenty of it - water off a duck's back now. Perhaps Mary isn't cut out for SM? Not everyone is.

Yes, you need a skin like a rhino to take some of the abuse on here. As a Jewish woman and a Brexiteer it can be pretty tough going sometimes! And frustrating too when other side doesn’t want to engage in factual debate. Not for everyone, you’re right.
