I just don’t understand why these silly Iranian women are wasting their time on this sort of nonsense when there are women at the BBC who are fighting the true oppression of a six figure salary every day. #prayfortherealvictimshttps://twitter.com/negarmortazavi/status/958000033365970944 …

Iranian women put their scarves on sticks in the middle of busy streets, as a peaceful protest to mandatory Hijab laws. We have been fighting this unfair law for three decades, slowly but consistently. We fought and we pushed back. And this is where we are today. pic.twitter.com/cwNOiykTUp

You say you advocate free education because you got a full grant because your mum was so poor and obviously no fees then but how do you think kids living in poverty due to tory austerity will be healthy or well educated enough to benefit from that?

I never said my mum was poor. I said I qualified for a full grant. I oppose the end of maintenance grants & rise in fees. I don’t believe the child of any responsible parent in this country goes hungry.

You said you were entitled to a full grant because your mum didn't earn enough, you also said she wasn't a single parent?

Not earning enough isn’t the same as being poor.

I take it then it was just calculated on your mum's earnings?

Yes. It was a LONG time ago, Emma. Grants were the norm then. What exactly is the point you are trying but failing to make?

I feel I am making a very clear point, the grant was based on earnings of your parents. It's not a hard question to answer. Nothing has changed fraud has always been fraud.

Jesus Christ. Yes, I was entitled to and for a full grant. You didn’t have to be “poor” to get a grant then. You had to have low earnings. Not the same thing. What is so complicated about this?

I teach my kids to compare themselves with the best not the worst and never say "everyone was doing it" to say it was the Norm and everyone was fiddling grants is pathetic, it is stealing, same as benefit fraud I assume you wouldn't agree with?

You haven't answered if it was just based on your mum's earnings and I would dispute what you say and believe you did have to be on a very low income to get a full grant.

I’m older than JHB. Can confirm full grant norm for low earnings (not poor). Common then for only one parent to work

No it wasn't different, you were either entitled to it or you weren't,if you were honest about earnings. Students now are entitled to same free education that you enjoyed and grants to live on. Some people don't want to pull up the ladder.

Well my point would be that students today don’t have the advantages that I had, and that’s terrible.

Thanks Elizabeth I agree. What really upsets me though is children living in poverty who won't be healthy, well educated or well housed enough to even be in a position to go to uni. Then they are well and truly trapped with no prospects of changing their lives.

So my issue is, Julia endorses tory policy, says no child of a responsible parent is going hungry in this country? Yet she says she advocates free education? I find this hypocritical. Also the issue about eligibility to get a full grant is separate to tuition fees.

It's not complicated, quite simple, was based on BOTH parents earning and u did have to be on a very low income to get a full grant. Also if a child is living in poverty they will not be healthy, educated or housed well enough to take advantage of the free education you advocate
