Her male colleagues weren’t doing the same job. North America editor is vastly senior to China editor. There are no comparisons in these sorts of jobs as each very different & people come with different experience & skills

North America Editor does not become 'vastly more senior' just because you say so, @juliaHB1. And Carrie was not on £180k as China Editor. Helpful to stick to facts.

It's true they weren't doing the same job, but she had different (and more dangerous) challenges that shouldn't be overlooked in her pay - contending with surveillance, police harassment and of course the small matter of speaking Chinese fluently....

I’d say the opposite in terms of seniority. In most industries, people who can cover the nuances and history of the Asian region are far harder to find.

Bullshit. I worked at the BBC. I can tell you that if a man were in that post we would not be having this discussion.

Did the BBC actually say that? Or did it acknowledge the differences in role and use that as defence? I haven't heard that said anywhere.. Is this just your take on it? Not to mention that America is significantly safer than China.

Also when you reach that level of remuneration it's way beyond pay grades and has reached the level of personal negotiation of salary between you and your boss. Maybe she should have just asked for more when she started

Just shows how much you know about job evaluation! That’s the whole point of equal pay legislation, comparing jobs against each other using a systematic process. They don’t have to be the same jobs - just rated as equivalent. Keep up Julia

I wouldn’t be surprised if every broadcast journalist (whether in TV or Radio) has a bespoke employment contract with even male presenters paid differently to each other. “Box Office” appeal, along with other factors, must be part of the negotiation armoury of those with agents.
