It was always, surely, obvious that Tim Farron thought gay sex to be a sin? It was also always obvious that he thought it an issue of personal morality which was just that, personal, and nothing to do with him being an MP or Lib Dem leader.

His voting record on LGBT rights is sound, which is the only thing that matters to me. There's certainly no contradiction between being a liberal and privately thinking people make the wrong personal choices. Pretty much a definition of liberalism in fact.

It is, however, naive (to put it mildly) to reckon you can be a liberal leader and hold personal views quite so out of step with your members and the voters you're trying to appeal to.

Anyway, I'm done defending Tim's right to hold views I don't agree with. I think everyone's views have been exhaustively rehearsed on this. Including now by Tim.

Agree with you. Always liked Tim. I just don’t understand why he ever thought he was a liberal at all while holding those views.
