I'm amazed that a journalist doesn't actually understand the relationship between free speech, inappropriate comments, hate speech and consequences.

Whataboutery! He wasn't punished though was he? He resigned. You are being deliberately obtuse. It wasn't a "comment" it was sick. How can folk trust a cabinet member who thinks this is funny? He was free to make it but when in public office there are rules.

I think his comments made him totally unsuitable for the job. He should never have been offered it. We expect certain standards from people in public life. I don’t doubt it was meant as a joke but add to this all the other unsavory things he said - he had to go.
