And the the clock is turned back 30 years, as the, "It was only a joke" and "free speech", arguments are pedalled out by Toby Young's defenders; they are more upset that he was exposed and targeted than they are of his actual attitudes and behaviour. Incredible really.https://twitter.com/JuliaHB1/status/950865310898446336 …

With respect Julia, that's not true. I'm not a Tory, and I don't agree with free schools - I'm honest about that. As a father, a son, a brother, a colleague, a friend and a neighbour, I was more upset about the sexual content of his tweets; but I appreciate your response.

I can’t disagree more with that idea. I completely admired him for the independent thinking and bravery he demonstrated on schools. I was utterly disappointed with his unacceptable remarks.

Quite possibly one of the most honest responses to the Toby Young situation.

Sometimes I wish the clock would be turned back 30 years! In those days, at least we *spoke* to each other and had proper discussions and debates. Social media has created a platform for angry people to be bloody rude!

Agreed. Not everyone, but for the most part here is too little actual debate, much mud slinging, name calling and swearing; this and the 'liking' of comments and tweets that does has nothing in common with liking but a simple demonstration of partisanship. However, we do try.
