HMRC is taking a very close interest in the tax affairs of radio presenters who channel their earnings through personal service companies. And it is certainly a device that avoids tax and NICs.

I'm not contending you're a criminal, Julia. I am saying that the structure you have chosen to adopt minimises your tax bill - avoids tax - and that's not very patriotic.
-
What moral obligation is there to pay tax? It’s purely a legal construct used by the state to confiscate our money. I’m legally obliged to pay tax. I’ll stick to funding charities when it comes to morals.
-
Kind of ironic given your Twitter name? Tax avoidance is immoral IMO. Taxes are not confiscation. They are the price of society and are for the many.
-
Glad you like the name. I respect your view in the morality of tax avoidance and I have no issue if our parliamentarians make policy that increases the tax burden if that is the will of parliament. We need them to simplify tax rules and be more proactive in closing loopholes.

You happily use the phrase ‘benefits scrounger’, so I assume you’ll happily badge yourself as a tax scrounger? I guarantee those, like yourself, who choose to avoid NI and income tax cost the rest of a lot more than the tiny amount of benefits fraud.
-
That sounds like a good # to get trending and naming and shaming
#taxscrounger -
Can anyone get that # going?

The word is moral Julia, not legal. As individuals, our patriotism lies in our morals, not our legal obligations.
-
So can you confirm you pay more tax than you are obligated to pay?
-
Absolutely, and I'd pay more if I was given a cast iron guarantee that it went towards fairer pay for nurses and teachers etc. There are quite a few people like me that want massive societal change to benefit public services.
-
I’m sure we’d all pay a bit more if we got cast iron guarantees on what WE would like too. But it doesn’t work that way. And some of us already pay 45% tax so at what point does it start to become ‘fair’?
-
When this govt collects taxes fairly, stops loopholes that most that aren't PAYE are accessing. All without fear of those in power.
-
So you’re talking about lots of self employed tradesmen etc too, and not just the so called few then? And how about getting the lazy off their settees while we’re at it. But I’m not sure that fits with your blinkered view.
-
Yes. I'm sick of being offered cash prices for work on my house by the people that in the same breath moan about the state of schools, hospitals and call an ambulance when their partners go into labour because they don't want to pay car parking at hospitals.

The Enclosures were legal too, as were the Corn Laws and the Combination Acts, and the Slave Trade. Nice laws, made by rich people, to benefit rich people.

Would that time be if we stay in the EU for when they introduce their new anti tax avoidance laws in 2019? Interesting that the Tories are busting there arses trying to leave.
