Come talk to me about patriotism, Julia, when you don't channel your earnings through a personal service company to pay only 20% corporation tax.https://twitter.com/JuliaHB1/status/946442166267731973 …

You do channel your earnings through a personal service company. And by leaving hundreds of thousands of pounds undistributed you avoid NICs and income tax.
-
I, like all freelancers with unpredictable earnings, pay a lower rate of tax and NI as we don’t get salaries, holiday pay, pensions, sick pay, maternity pay etc. All totally open, legal and normal. As you well know. Ps. Shouldn’t you be in bed by now it’s only 9pm where I am.
-
Try again. It's got nothing to do with being a freelancer. I am also a freelancer and pay income tax on all of my earnings, 47% on most. It has to do with your decision to channel your earnings through a personal service company paying only 20%.
-
That’s because you work for a chambers and all your earnings go through them. I am paid by dozens of different employers on an irregular basis and, as you know, a PSC is a very normal model for such payments.
-
Try again again. I also have lots of different clients and am not paid a penny by Chambers. And, no, I don't agree a personal service company is a normal model. It is very often abusive tax avoidance.

Hi Julia, I'm self-employed and don't have the funds to set up a company to minimise my tax burden. I do, however, work in state primaries that are suffering through lack of funding. Tell me, do you think it is morally right that you should pay less tax % than me?
-
I would appreciate a reply, you profess to have a strong moral compass. I haven't seen you on BBCQT once without you expressing outrage at 'immorality' and talking about 'British Values'. How about giving back as a patron of our community music org? http://12tonemusic.co.uk/patron

For a QC he is showing himself up to be a right plank

Really? Even when I've disagreed with him I've found him honest and principled...

Ah
@JuliaHB1 you hypocrite. Always on he radio complaining about this and that group and trying to spread hate and suspicion about people when all along you;re a tax avoider. -
Everyone with an IQ higher than an aubergine avoids tax. When you fill up your car do you drive around until you find the most expensive filling station?
-
This is the worst analogy i have ever seen for anything.

Can we all do that Julia ....what would be the state of the UK economy if we did or did you do it to benefit the rest of us ?

...and when cash is extracted from the company, Julia will then pay (on top of the corporation tax) income tax on the dividend. A typical and entirely legal arrangement.
-
Legal and moral may not be the same thing
-
I’m no stranger to legality vs morality in tax. If the government isn’t happy with this common and legal arrangement then it can legislate against it.
-
Absolutely. But what if the government isn’t particularly moral itself? What if the govt is happy to let the rich use these loopholes? Say, the kind of govt who have their own fingers in the till (expenses claims etc)?
-
Perhaps we should be the guardians of our own morality, not point our fingers at the government as if that absolves us of any moral responsibility for our own actions.
