I will never stop being irritated that people continue to refer to boats, ships and cars as “she” and “her”. They’re not female, they’re inanimate objects. It just sounds dumb.https://twitter.com/alibunkallsky/status/938685342634463232 …

Because of the affection that men have for women. In wartime it’s a vital emotional anchoring expression.

Women aren't inanimate objects.

Nobody said they were inanimate. It’s an emotional projection to call an aircraft or ship “She” My wife pictured some years ago.pic.twitter.com/f4o6z7qRxF

I fear you protest too much. & you miss the point. Though some are masculine - see pics; chaps have almost always referred to their steeds in the feminine. You may find female fighter pilots do indeed refer to their own jets in the masculine.pic.twitter.com/dvVfCkVZzr

You should learn to speak Welsh, as a table, for example is female whilst the accompanying chair is male. Not sure who makes up the rules.

Silly to call ships female; skilfully handled they respond well. Now printers, they should be female: capricious, unreliable, constantly telling us they’re not filled properly ...

I always thought it was one of the last vestiges of gendered nouns from the strong Saxon roots our our West Germanic language. And rather like it for that reason. I remember discussing it in class when I did German at university.

Much like we used to use the male personal pronoun when referring to people in general (e.g., 'if you ask the average Scot, he will admit that likes a bit of haggis'). Equivalent to 'man' in German.
