Wow..really, you get heated over this?
Personally I found my kites (ask @JohnNicholRAF) given the female gender/moniker gave strength, reliability and a bond to all associated with them, especially when completing a successful SAR operation.

That's because Julia (who I rather like) has never had the pleasure of taking one of these machines to war. That's why we personalise them.
-
Then why not call him "him"? Same difference.
-
now you are just being contrary for the sake of it!
-
No, I'm not! If it's about personalising inanimate objects, why wouldn't at least some of them be masculine? Why are they all feminine?
-
Because of the affection that men have for women. In wartime it’s a vital emotional anchoring expression.
-
Women aren't inanimate objects.
-
Nobody said they were inanimate. It’s an emotional projection to call an aircraft or ship “She” My wife pictured some years ago.pic.twitter.com/f4o6z7qRxF

A ship is mother. Home. All goodly chattels and earthly belongings of the seafarer remain in her. Warmth, comfort well being and safety. She's a she.
-
So, like a father too then?
