There’s a slight* difference between humouring an idiot president of a foreign power for a few days and giving up your sovereignty to a foreign power. * Hugehttps://twitter.com/dpjhodges/status/936147908663173121 …

Interesting that the same people who demand we seize our freedom and independence from Europe simultaneously argue we can't afford to rebuff Donald Trump.

That would be the one where we have MEPs, and our Government has (had) a voice in the Council. I get we are leaving and you don't want to be part of it but it is not foreign when we had a direct role in governance

Always was "foreign" We joined a "trading" arrangement to improve our economy, It turned into a "political" entity. We now have a massive trade deficit with R-EU countries so leaving should help address that issue amongst all the others.

Nope. The PM in the seventies was publicly clear it was not just limited to trade. But that is a different point to mine. Mine is we had a (leading) voice in EU governance. De facto that means it is not a foreign power.

If that were true then the EU Constitution would have been ratified by the European States when it was voted on. 90% of them said no. Instead they ushered it in through the back door via the Lisbon Treaty!

The Lisbon Treaty was ratified by all member state governments. The UK Parliament specifically voted on it and approved it. My point is not about whether that was good or bad. My point is that it is wrong to describe the EU as foreign when we are involved in its governance

My point is that in the 70's political union was never on the ballot to join a single market. The Constitution was written and rejected! To think that we had influence in the EU is naive. Smoke and mirrors for the political illusion.

That is a different point to the one I am making and in any case the UK Parliament is the one that decides generally and indeed has voted on all EU treaties. It is simply wrong to say it is naive to say we had no influence. The UK was a key voice in pushing the single market.

A state visit welcomes America and their head of state. It doesn't necessarily endorse their choice of President.

“The sovereignty of Parliament is a fundamental principle of the UK constitution. Whilst Parliament has remained sovereign throughout our membership of the EU, it has not always felt like that.” - The Govt White Paper on Brexit - always been sovereign, just told we weren’t.

But surely the will of the people overrides Parliamentary sovereignty? In the words of Cicero: The good of the people is the greatest law.

Generally people who cite the ‘will of the people’ really mean “what I want is...” And what happens when Parliament believes the ‘will of the people’ is actually in direct conflict to ‘good of the people’?

Take it up with Cicero mate. His words, not mine. He's generally thought of as a slightly higher intellect than Gina Miller, eh?
