I have never understood why the UK has to pay anything to leave the EU. If being part of the EU has really been such a benefit to the UK, wouldn't leaving the EU be enough of a penalty?

Many in the EU say the UK can't be seen to get a better deal outside the EU than in it. If that's even theoretically possible, then it's an admission that the EU is failing its members who could be better off by leaving!

I was listening today on the radio about people who found it difficult to get their gym membership cancelled. Seems most think it an outrage & they should get their fees repaid. Imagine being told you have to pay even more to leave.

UK does not have to pay a penny- we could leave tomorrow without paying a penny but without a trade deal

Didn't the House of Lords study this very subject and concluded that indeed we don't have to pay a brass farthing.

We are about to go out into the world to forge deals with countries around the world, how are they going to view us if we won't honour our contractual commitments just because it has become politically inconvenient

There might be a commitment but not 55 billions worth.

That then either means you're wrong and we do owe it or our government is very bad at negotiations

Finish of our contributions until their next budget, it doesn’t amount to 55 billion

Then by your own reasoning our government isn't fit to conduct the negotiations... wait I've just realised you're a bot.

Not another one who accuses anyone they can't debate with of being a bot. It's getting a little repetative now and frankly childish!

We have to pay because have to honour our commitments, as the EU built many of the motorways in Scotland, funded much of Crossrail, and countless other projects.

If we pay 50+ billion just to leave and have no benefits, how do countries that never contribute a net sum to the coffers get to stay and enjoy full membership at our expense??
