Most ridiculous idea ever. We use sat steering in our tractors and in certain places the signal to the receivers fails. Who ever dreamed this up needs a smack
-
I’m not that relaxed in a train!

It's worse than you think. When the human is asked to intervene it will likely be during a high stress situation. Eventually this will land in the laps of people with very little driving experience.

It is actually more stressful than driving yourself. Our Mercedes will maintain speed and distance to the car and front. Very stressful, as I'd slow down sooner
-
Tesla driver here. It takes getting used to but now love 'autopilot' it's not perfect though, so do need to still watch the road.
-
which sorts of negates the point of it...
-
Not at all. It's way safer in general & makes it less hard work concentrating. drove Kent 2 Swansea & back in 1 day with 2 short stops.
-
I'd prefer o drive myself.. not sure why EV is so wrapped up with autonomous driving. I'd rather see a much cheaper ev, and ditch all the autonomous stuff (for the moment)
-
Fair enough. I used to be think id never want an automatic, now wouldn't go back to all that. Love everything about my car.

A car you don't drive yourself is called a Taxi. I doubt many folk will invest in owning a driverless car, not least because most humans actually enjoy driving their car themselves - However, thanks to militant train drivers I predict driverless trains have a bright future.

@Drystonesonnet So it can’t take you on a pub crawl then & drive you home? Honestly, what is the point? -
I suspect that legally, if you are in control of your vehicle, then if you are over the limit, then that is still a serious offence.
-
That’s what I suspect too. Only reason for wanting one is gone! I suspect it’s entirely about control. As per.

Fundamentally flawed if requires driver to stay alert. It wont happen, and is virtually impossible if not doing it all the time. Much better if software stays alert watching human driver. That would work.
-
Which is great. Drifting out of Lane warnings are good, for example

You still have to open the door to let the clutch out though

The answer to the driverless car issue is to have a cute little side joystick controller like they have for the pilot on those funny Airbus planes ... the computer does it all but the humans can 'feel like' they are 'in charge' ;)
