A lot of nonsense being spouted about how to help bright kids from poor homes into top universities. It's really simple: GRAMMAR SCHOOLS !!

My point is that Grammar Schools is not the answer. I passed the 11 plus and went to such a school. That was a failed system then 1/

It may benefit a few at the expense of the many. The same arguments apply now. It's about national priorities 2/

We tried to beat the next kid at a sport (now they promote mediocre). We were encouraged to do what we were good at. Discipline was taught.

Teaching is also a skill rather than a piece of paper - having the 'knowledge' doesnt mean they motivate children to learn/ flourish

Of course this is right. My point is that Grammar Schools are the wrong priority. We can't fully explore these issues in a few 140 ch tweets

They are when state schools are struggling for funding and having to cut back. Wrong to fund more grammars when this is happening

We too have PhDs in high schools and FE colleges. It can be done.. The system is still wholly Victorian... That's what's wrong.

Masters are the norm not PhDs. They also have autonomy rather than the micro-managing, OFSTED probing, observation culture of UK schools.
