Because many people living on benefits don't have a land line phone at home so have to use their mobiles. The helpline number should be free https://twitter.com/therebellion77/status/918378290414579712 …

All helpline and call centre phone numbers should be free. Companies fleece general public as it is, it's the least they can do.

Indeed, all government phone lines should be free. It smacks of profiteering to even charge local rate when it is a public service.

The caller's phone provider sets the charges. On a landline, around £8 per month for unlimited calls.

On a mobile, unlimited calls are around £15 per month on contract or around £20 per month on pay-as-you-go.

No, the calls should be free because it is a public service. We pay our taxes, we've already paid for it.

you expect people travel to a job centre, which might mean them using public transport , paying a fare to use something that should be free

Hang on. Isn’t it an 03 number? So will be free with any inclusive minutes which almost every single tariff consists of these days.

The job centre tells ppl to kerp their phones. When you lose your job, losing your phone spells the end of your chances.
