Yep, UK resisted further integration & democratisation of EU. How hypocritical it is if Tories to now criticise EU for lack of democracy?
Why? They are implementing a democratic decision...
They are implementing an advisory referendum result, while denying any referendum or in/out decision based on final negotiated terms
If the Govt did grant a 2nd referendum what would be the likelihood of the EU offering any sort of reasonable terms?
I think it incentivise them to make a good offer while keeping UK inside EU eg local preference rules; exactly what Brexit ideologies fear
But they wouldn't make much an offer to leave which is what the referendum would be about.
Yes. It was. Follow the thread.https://twitter.com/sturdyalex/status/906884062018719744 …
It was made perfectly clear by Heath and others that it was political union. Not hard to check that actually. But trust me - I was there.
Juia was sens contemporraneous documents, transcript of Heath speech and video of Heath debating the referendum. But, y'know, facts. Boo.
The EEC had already stated that it's aim was to become the EU and a political union when we joined in 1971.
Actually they did. Here's Vernon Bogdonor's lecture on it, where he says it was made clear all along,https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zL5XvrHbwBc …
Referendums should be held if there is evidence of a public shift in opinion. This may be inevitable with the ongoing effects of Brexit.
Yes it was It was the triumph of civilisation over nationalism
Oh i think it was for a political union. I voted for it. And if you enjoy referendums, why wait? Let's have another shortly, eh?
