Great, now we can all move to Japan! What's that? We've got a free trade deal without free movement of people? Oh.http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-40520218 …

Julia - there is so much wrong with that (legally and in practical terms) that it's hard to know where to begin. Happy to try, if you like.

But to illustrate, take a small UK co wanting to sell jam to (a) France and (b) to a country with which UK has a free trade agreement (FTA).
-
At the moment, France is easy. Jam goes in a van, and off it goes. No checks, no customs.
-
Let's say we are in 2025 and UK has a 0 tariff FTA with EU. Jam goes in a van. But it needs a custom declaration form.
-
These are needed to show the jam comes from UK and not US (with which UK now has a 0 tariff FTA). They are complex. Cost £.
-
The small co also has to be able to prove the jam meets EU regulatory requirements. More paperwork. More cost.
-
The van is liable to be stopped in Calais for checks. Could be stuck behind other lorries. Delay. Probably ok for jam: bad news for fish.
-
Big cos can manage all this stuff. That's why there's lots of trade across US/Canada border. Harder if you're Helen in the Archers.

Japan EU started from many restrictions to trade, to now less. UK EU start from no restrictions, to ..? Freest trade = pooled sovereignty

I like the way you have structured your well thought through and presented argument! Oh, wrong thread

a FTA isn't as good as SM, especially with such a big one on our doorstep. U're happy to take the ecnmc hit from reducing r ability 2 trade?

There are genuinely helpful people on this thread trying to explain why this statement is wrong, are you going to engage?

You need a single market to trade "frictionless". In free trade agreements, trade is not "free" i.e. Hindered by non tariff barriers
-
So there's no friction in the European Single Market?

You're doing the usual Brexiter trick in conflating "trade", "free trade" and "EU Single Market". They are different.
-
We can obviously trade, even freely, with EU but that doesn't mean no customs controls which will take time from minutes to weeks.
-
Whereas Single Market and Customs union means NO customs controls within the EU. If you don't understand this, find out before blathering
-
But then what do we expect from someone that denies the climate obeys the laws of physics?

We do need a Single Market if we want to avoid non-tariff barriers. Free trade is about a lot more than tariffs. A lot more.
