This obsession with kids on free school meals is bizarre. They're not the only kids from poorer families, you know.

I do know thanks. It's the mostly commonly used proxy. But you get the same story if you use IDACI or IMD.

In Kent the richer your parents are the more likely you are to go to grammar school even when taking primary performance into account.

Again, the current system massively distorts who gets in and who doesn't, as you well know.

And how was the new system going to avoid that distortion?

When there are only a few grammars, of course middle class parents will game the system. Less of an impact if one in every neighbourhood.

I was talking about Kent! It has a full selective system.

From somebody who went to a Grammar in Kent, I'd like to give my 2 cents and agree with Sam that the Grammar system is bullshit.

There were kids brighter than me who didn't sit the 11 plus bcos their parents didn't push. At that age you are totally reliant on them.

Same happened to me in 1970s. My parents wanted me to go to local comp because it was easier and my sister was there.
