The issue is whether taxpayers should continue to pay for meals for non-disadvantaged state school pupils aged 4-7. Not obvious they should.https://twitter.com/dianajohnsonmp/status/877162599510659073 …

Good. What a truly dreadful idea taking food from children. https://twitter.com/standardnews/status/877161619515748352 …

Much better to spend that money on disadvantaged kids who need it, not better off kids that don't.

Not it sin't. Means-testing is expensive, stigmatizes poor, & creates anomalies. This way we only MT once - when we tax people.

Universal benefits are cheaper to administer and fairer. I don't understand why you can't grasp that.

These "why should X pay for Y" arguments are infantile and misleading. They only consider one 1/2 of the equation.

It's a bit like saying "Why should I pay the same to post a letter to Leeds as it costs to send one to Edinburgh?"

& the answer to that question is: All things considered it's a much better, simpler, & cheaper system - no matter how daft that might seem

When there is an opt out many take it, it then becomes uneconomic for a primary school to serve hot meals at all. Just leave it alone.

There is evidence to suggest improved educational outcomes when children eat together at school.

Also, children eating together is another chance to teach about healthy eating, like Europe where, incidentally, childhood obesity is lower.
