Re Labour VAT on private schools policy. Every middle-class parent in Britain will cheer it. Then quietly vote Tory.

ha ha ha ha - actually, as a mum of a kid at private school, I don't have a problem with VAT on the fees. They're not charities.

As a parent with no kids in private school....I do have a problem it. You already pay tax for state schools which you don't use.

true, but there's a strong argument that state schools would be better with those kids in them.

A strong, but separate argument, unless we think that VAT will engender a sudden rush to state schooling. Same with VAT exempt healthcare.

You're obviously not on the cusp of affordability. VAT on these fees will drive many to State schools thus decreasing the policy income.

It is when they're just wasting it on free lunches for middle class kids. Breakfast for those on free school meals far greater benefit

Not everyone earns as much as you @JuliaHB1 . if this was introduced I could not afford it and my kids would have to go to state school

I realise that. But that doesn't mean the VAT fee status for private schools is justifiable

Perhaps. Parents live on the breadline to pay for education. There are 615,000 in private and a lot would move to State if VAT was levied

they're 'not for profits' - no shareholders - no profit = no tax - surplus ploughed back in & pay input VAT

that's because charity law in the U.K. is anachronistic - the point is there are no shareholders benefitting

Charities are also supposed to provide a public benefit. The definition of this is stretched to the limit in the case of private schools.

I know plenty of people who do same, but have to stretch for fees. But you are right, should not be regarded as charities.
