We currently bang up 86000 people, double the number under the not-soft Thatcher regime. 50% re-offend. It is madness to persist in this.

yes but is that an argument to send fewer people to prison or to keep them in longer to cut reoffending rates?

People who get community service reoffend less than those who get short sentences. Fewer people should go to prison.

That's absolutely right, but doesn't entirely explain the correlation. For many prisoners money could be better spent.
