Questions to ask people who oppose grammar schools: 1. what kind of school did they attend? 2. what kind of school do their children attend?

I oppose grammars. I went to an excellent grammar, I have no children yet - but I'll hopefully be able to send them to comp.

but why do you oppose the very kind of school that has helped you get on in life? (I bloody LOVE Horrible Histories BTW!)

lots of data shows poorer kids get left behind, 11 too young too - and middle classes tutor kids to get into selective schools

and could require grammar schools provide free tutoring for poorer kids for the 11+. Plenty of ways around any problems.

Less able kids are helped to learn by being with the more able kids and good teachers engaging the whole class. 1/2

no, the brightest kids are held back by less able kids. It's not their job to teach the other kids.

It was consciousness of my poverty and lack of advantages that put me off applying to Oxbridge - NOT my academic ability.

that's a great shame. No one at Oxbridge would have cared what your parents earned.

Maybe, but I would have been the odd one out who couldn't afford the £200 xmas ball in the first term: I was not so resilient then

so not having money to go to a ball put you off applying to Oxbridge? They have more grants than all unis combined

Just an example. My best friend went to Oxford and came back utterly changed after 1 term. This was back in the 80s, btw.

The Oxbridge advantage was not so entrenched back then. Academically, Bristol, York, etc were better for my course.

Evidence? I was one of the brighter kids and none of us were held back by classmates - bog-standard city comp.

In the 80s my son was stuck on table with low achieving kids at Primary. He ended up helping them to his detriment @Talkload
