Questions to ask people who oppose grammar schools: 1. what kind of school did they attend? 2. what kind of school do their children attend?
and could require grammar schools provide free tutoring for poorer kids for the 11+. Plenty of ways around any problems.

Less able kids are helped to learn by being with the more able kids and good teachers engaging the whole class. 1/2
-
no, the brightest kids are held back by less able kids. It's not their job to teach the other kids.

It was consciousness of my poverty and lack of advantages that put me off applying to Oxbridge - NOT my academic ability.
-
that's a great shame. No one at Oxbridge would have cared what your parents earned.
-
Maybe, but I would have been the odd one out who couldn't afford the £200 xmas ball in the first term: I was not so resilient then
-
so not having money to go to a ball put you off applying to Oxbridge? They have more grants than all unis combined
-
Just an example. My best friend went to Oxford and came back utterly changed after 1 term. This was back in the 80s, btw.
-
The Oxbridge advantage was not so entrenched back then. Academically, Bristol, York, etc were better for my course.

Toby Young had idea on my radio show: have schools 25% selective, but then have to reach out to poorer families too.

Best teachers will always be hoovered up by the grammars in a two-tier system, condemning those who fail the 11+. 2/2
