People who are opposed to grammars often: Went to private schools Send their own kids to schools that select by the backdoor (1/2)

(2/2) Can afford to buy a home in a good catchment area Send their kids to comps but pay for private tutors. Talk about "inequality" a lot.
-
that's such a terrible stance to take. You're comparing personal and national strategies as a like for like.
-
no, I'm pointing out the personal hypocrisy of many of the people who oppose grammar schools but make sure they bypass comp system
-
I don't think its hypocritical to get the best for your child while also wanting the system to help as many others as possible.
-
no, if you think selective schools are wrong as a policy for everyone, you can't then send your own child to a selective school
-
they pay into the system then spend extra on their child's education. Not like they opt out financially. They prerogative
-
we ALL pay into the system. Only some can afford to buy their way out of its consequences

I oppose grammars. I went to an excellent grammar, I have no children yet - but I'll hopefully be able to send them to comp.
-
hopefully. I went to a comp and never considered sending my child privately - until I saw the local school she could get into.
-
I think that's the issue - grammars and indies pluck talent out of cohort. Comps should have big investment
-
schools have had massive extra £ in past 2 decades but I agree they need more. Results have little to do with money, sadly.
-
ultimately I would like everyone to have an excellent education unrelated to their parents' situation
-
absolutely. But an excellent education for bright kids is different to an excellent education for average or below average kids
-
one problem with grammars is they make decision on kids' potential at a fixed time. Kids develop at different rates
-
yes, but can solve that my having 12+, 13+ and 14+ too.

of what relevance are these questions. It's about the future not the past. Unless you are a reactionary Tory. Just like you.
-

Like most I had no say where went to school. Learnt via going 2 private school that some kids getting privileged schooling unjust
-
it is unjust but so is the postcode lottery for good state schools. That isn't changing any time soon.
-
And supporting grammar schools will make that worse. So-called 'choice' of schools only benefits the sharp-elbowed
