how exactly was the EU referendum 'demanded by the British people'???

polling showed massive support for a referendum. I think the turnout and result are proof, aren't they?
-
I didn't hear or see any agitation among the public for a referendum. People would have been quite happy without one.
-
maybe not among people you know...

When was it demanded by the British people? Only 24% of electorate voted for the Tory manifesto in GE. FPTP gave the mandate.

Many of the 'impartial' BBC seem to be struggling with democracy.

@allisonpearson But it wasn’t being demanded by public. It was being demanded by Farage and far right of his party -
Surely the fact that they voted 4 indicated the desire for it? The result justifies it in that sense.
-
Not denying result, but this is on the political stupidity of holding it in first place
-
So politicians should not act on what they know the public want then?
-
YOU’re missing the point, there was no overwhelming appetite for a ref from public.
-
The public are apathetic. They have no overwhelming appetite for anything. Look at GE turnouts
-
Following that logic, there should be no referendums ever :-)
-
Its an imperfect system but its ridiculous to suggest it should not have happened if people actually got out in huge numbers
