Two quites don't make a quote.
not credible to say referenda have no place in a parliamentary democracy. Citizens should decide the fundamentals
But this referendum isn't being used to decide "the fundamentals".
It's pretty fundamental. But my point is in defence of referenda in general rathe than this one in particular.
Were it about the fundamentals, the arguments woud be on the facts - not who can get away with the biggest whoppers.
That's the problem with referendums-the issues can't be compartmented. This shouldn't be a beauty contest for next Tory leader
Can you elaborate Julia? David went into quite a lot of detail. A response deserves similar.
I don't think I need to! Democracy doesn't need an explanation. Voters' wishes ignored at recent gen elections
Why are referenda democratic?
why aren't they?
There are entire modules in university politics courses dedicated to trying to answer this. It's not obvious.
at gen elections we only get to vote for local MP, may be safe seat, on package deal of manifestos. That means
It seems that the (largely unqualified) British public are just being asked to solve an internal Tory squabble.
and there's the whole problem in one phrase: the largely unqualified British public. So patronising.
I follow politics & haven't a clue. How is anyone supposed to see through the nonsense, on both sides?
answer one simple question: who do you want to make your laws? Westminster or Brussels?
tell me about these laws which we have to abide by (and don't mention bananas)
it was a binary question not a debating point: Westminster or Brussels?
you haven't given me a binary answer to my question though
despite that, my answer is that I'm in favour of whichever one comes up with the best laws
