So, it's wrong to tax fizzy drinks? But it's ok to tax me to pay for the NHS care for obese people who consume litres of fizzy drinks?

@JuliaHB1 VAT is already charged on soft drinks. https://www.gov.uk/guidance/rates-of-vat-on-different-goods-and-services#food-and-drink-animals-animal-feed-plants-and-seeds … What you are defending is an *extra* levy.

@JuliaHB1 I think you are missing the point, No one (I imagine) is saying that there should be no taxes. The question concerns the extra.

@AStuttaford yes, I am aware of that. We have many "extra" taxes already - fuel duty, tobacco duty, alcohol duties, stamp duty.

@JuliaHB1 Indeed, but to suggest (as you did) that ppl were outraged that fizzy drinks were being taxed was wrong. They oppose the extra tax.

@JuliaHB1 That's a fair point, I'd rather make people pay for the treatment than tax the drinks though.

@JuliaHB1 NI should be changed..if smoke or obese you pay more. Fairer system and people need to take responsibilty.

@rafterycatpower maybe, but it's generally not considered a bad thing for people to live to old age.

@JuliaHB1 agree of course, just questioning if the NHS costs will be reduced by solving the obesity epidemic at all in reality.
