Court ruling on unmarried widow's bereavement benefits lays down potential £300m challenge to IDShttp://gu.com/p/4gtgx/stw
@patrickjbutler otherwise, marriage is meaningless. When it clearly isn't. btw, the term "man and wife" is very unGuardian!

@JuliaHB1 The ruling said that it discriminated against the children (who have no say in parents marital status.)Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

@JuliaHB1 Plus govt's own Family Test is relaxed about cohabitation (so current bereavement benefit arrangements would presumably fail that) -
@patrickjbutler there is a strong argument for kids not to suffer when any parent dies but then the benefit should be for kids not for widow -
@JuliaHB1 yes, the widow(ER) should receive it on behalf of the kids (like child benefit). -
@patrickjbutler agreed. Anyway, always love debating you X

@JuliaHB1 oh, and "man and wife" was the judge's phrase ( but he didn't use inverted commas) :-) -
@patrickjbutler@JuliaHB1 are you sure he wasn't wiggling his fingers when he said it? ;-)
