Blame state schools, not Oxbridge, for discriminating against pupils | via @Telegraphhttp://www.telegraph.co.uk/education/universityeducation/12049535/Blame-state-schools-not-Oxbridge-for-discriminating-against-pupils.html …
@Roborovski1 I am middle class but only because my working class parents went to grammars & university & became professionals. Not posh.

@JuliaHB1 Hence only a tiny, tiny handful of working-class kids go to Oxbridge, even though many more have the grades/potential -
@Roborovski1 actually very few working class kids achieve the necessary grades, thanks to their schools and other factors. -
@JuliaHB1 Sure that's right, but working-class are also far less likely to get in even if they have the grades as they don't "fit" -
@Roborovski1 no, they're far less likely to apply. Nothing to do with faces fitting, I promise you. The only issue is confidence. -
@JuliaHB1 Do you have a source for that or is it another assertion? Every one you've made so far has dissolved on looking at actual data... -
@Roborovski1 no, my article was full of statistics, as you know. What evidence do you have for your last assertion? Absolutely none. -
@JuliaHB1 But accept some of those may not apply to Oxford: there's no data on it. Can that really explain the whole 45% difference though? -
@Roborovski1 they don't apply in sufficient numbers. Oxford has stats on their website. I explained the various factors in my article - 5 more replies

@JuliaHB1@Roborovski1 and if they did go they would probably feel left out by all the posh kids -
@paul_hemmer@Roborovski1 why would they feel left out? Plenty of working class kids when I was there never felt it was an issue. -
@JuliaHB1@Roborovski1 when all the posh kids don't need to work part time to fund their studies. -
@paul_hemmer@Roborovski1 I waitressed every holiday throughout my university years and I coped just fine. I was on a full grant, BTW. -
@JuliaHB1@Roborovski1 it's different now I guess. With high loans needing to be taken out -
@paul_hemmer@Roborovski1 yes, I think tuition fees are an abomination and the abolition of grants is terrible. -
@JuliaHB1@Roborovski1 with no offence it was easier in your day. Easier in mine too but I just missed out on the grants

@JuliaHB1 My point on your background is affluent middle-class better able to fit in at elite Oxbridge than working class, not anything else -
@Roborovski1 it's not about being able to fit in. Just about applying in the first place. Inverted snobbery is the problem, not snobbery -
@JuliaHB1 It's about passing an interview and admissions process that is biased towards those who are a good social fit for Oxbridge
