Researchers tried & tried & tried & never found evidence people come here for benefits. They come here for work, opportunity and fairness.
@IanDunt but it doesn't matter whether people come here for the benefits or not - just that they shouldn't be entitled to claim them.

@JuliaHB1 The point he's making is that it would discourage migrants, so in this context it does matter. -
@IanDunt so you don't think a migrant planning to come to UK wouldn't talk to someone they know who's already here & find this stuff out? -
@JuliaHB1 I don't sit and think anything. I read the research. And it pretty much unanimously finds benefits are not a draw. -
@IanDunt because people say they only come for work - or because they don't know about the benefits/tax credits etc? -
@JuliaHB1 Depends on study. But several show a total lack of awareness of benefits on offer, for both immigrants and asylum seekers. -
@IanDunt that's what I thought but many may still hear from friends/family already here that they "earn" £ - but that incs benefits/credits -
@JuliaHB1 Then that would show up in a study. Fwiw, most of what they'd hear from family is that they're having a really hard time. -
@IanDunt ah, but compared to life back home, not necessarily as bad.
