@JuliaHB1 They were the main cause of 800,000 fall in child poverty under Labour.

@georgeeaton the fall in RELATIVE poverty. Simplest way to solve child poverty is to stop paying people to have kids they can't afford. -

@JuliaHB1@georgeeaton had tax credits-of some form -since early 70s. Family income supplement >family credit>tax credits >university credit -
@imran_1@georgeeaton yes, but they are all just benefits by any other name, aren't they? Life existed before them and will continue after. -
@JuliaHB1@georgeeaton yes, life did go on and will go on. But tax credit cuts will increase child poverty & worsen work incentives. -
@imran_1 no, tax credits also provide a disincentive to work. No point doing extra hours at work if you can get same £ for doing nothing. -
@JuliaHB1 genuinely don't understand that point. How so? Tax credits strengthen rewards from work by topping up low pay. -
@imran_1 yes, that is the idea, but far too many on them CHOOSE to work part time, with partners not working at all. They and taxpayers... -
@JuliaHB1 one of big success stories has been rise in lone parent employment rate. TCs played key role in helping LPs into work (esp p/t) -
@imran_1 er, actually the biggest factor was the requirement that lone parents had to work when their child reaches school age. Good grief. - 1 more reply

@JuliaHB1 One of the problems is that tax credits form a charter for employers to pay low wages. Tory plan to cut £1300 to 3m is near evil! -
@Finman4 near evil? Can you even hear yourself? -
@JuliaHB1 Putting children into poverty isn't evil, how interesting! -
@Finman4 cutting tax credits is not the same thing as "putting children into poverty". -
@JuliaHB1 Correct, but it is a cause.

@JuliaHB1@georgeeaton - The living wage was a living wage back then but somewhere along the line something change, what? Any answers -
@WeVote4Change@georgeeaton so let's deal with THAT issue and not pretend to solve it by subsidising low wages! -
@JuliaHB1@georgeeaton - I think it's a lot easier said than done and that's the problem. How would you sort it out? Not an easy task
