If those scientists are looking for a leading world class university to work in, they’ve got plenty of choice among the top 20. Five of them are in the EU. Well, until Oct 31st, anyway... On Nov 1st, the EU doesn’t have a single one. *shrugs* https://twitter.com/DanielJHannan/status/1159837930916999168 …pic.twitter.com/s6uhN94aHT

The inability of the entire EU to produce one Top 20 university -- and only 1 in the Top 40 -- is as remarkable as the fact that it is never reported. Ditto the huge disparity in the number of EU students here as UK students in the EU.pic.twitter.com/hHPxGXMvBq

The most likely reason UK students do not go to other European universities is poor language skills. There was a lot of interest in Netherlands universities I seem to remember with much lower fees and courses taught in English.

Whilst language is certainly a consideration, I'd suggest the most likely reason UK students do not go to other European universities is that our universities are incalculably superior -- particularly if one factors in the Russell Group.

UK universities are a v good choice for anyone. But ranking is based on research not teaching.. that would I suspect make them more equal - less elitism. For undergraduates the course is also important + chance to live abroad for a few yrs. I think UK students are missing out.

Have you ever asked why the EU funds so many UK universities and little going the other way? €8.8bn between 2007 and 2013. Now ask why so many students are pro EU. They’re being taught to be from somewhere. I wonder where that somewhere might be...

I'm applying to universities next year. Not a single one of my classmates have said they're even considering studying at an EU university. A handful are considering America but the facts are the UK uni's are the best in the world.

Yes, but... EU research funding generates more than 19,000 jobs across the UK, £1.86 billion for the UK economy and contributes more than £1 billion to GDP, according to this report produced for Universities UK by Viewforth Consulting.

Julia this is all spin. The number of applicants granted a tier-one "exceptional talent visa" visa is well below the cap and always has been. The elimination of the cap makes no difference.pic.twitter.com/F0oDtkbtWT

I do find it somewhat ironic that remainers often use threat of exclusion from EU research as an argument in their favour. Without the UK there is no EU scientific or technical research. Even the much vaunted gallileo programme is entirely dependent on British tech.

Unless of course they want a research project with proper funding Science costs a lot these days - needs cooperation like the EU has. UK will be outside the EU so lacking funds.

No. We don't give them £10 so they can give us £5 back. We've got better universities, a better scientific track record and the resources of the 5th biggest economy in the world. Germany is heading for recession, France is in turmoil, Greece, Italy, Ireland, Spain are broke.

We give £10 to get £100 of benefits & savings. Customs costs alone will exceed cost of UK contribution to EU. Meanwhile UK gov won't have £ to fund major research - that's why you have international collaboration - costs are too high for 1 country alone

@ProfBrianCox: maybe my concern about you as a chippy Grammar School boy who didn’t get into Oxbridge was closer to the truth than I thought? A man who feels it necessary to put “Prof” in his Twitter handle, whose alma mater doesn’t even make the Top 20, let alone the Top 10 ...?
