Well, this call from a criminal barrister for tougher sentencing for carrying a knife seems eminently sensible. “It’s time we cracked down on people carrying knives” - Kevin Dent QChttps://blogs.spectator.co.uk/2019/08/its-time-we-cracked-down-on-people-carrying-knives/ …

Caught carrying a knife for no good reason, PRISON! No iffs or buts! Prison! It's the only way to stop this nonsense. Knife carriers are walking out of court laughing after their slap on the wrist!!!! Girlfriends caught carrying a knife for them, PRISON! This must be stopped!

2 problems currently: 1. Knife carriers know they will get away with it due to no stop and search and lack of police on the streets. 2. Our prisons are full and our politicians soft Until those are sorted out nothing can change

Lack of opportunities for poor kids is another, and some are pressured to carry knives on behalf of other, bigger kids. It costs £50k and upwards to hold someone in prison for a year - Costs could be cut and lives could be improved through early intervention programmes.

Sorry I don’t buy the lack of opportunity idea that much. Perhaps more information on the choices available to young people and better apprenticeships but quite frankly I want every knife carrying loon locked up

Custodial sentences can become apprenticeships in crime, and contacts built in prisons often help gangs expand their networks and make re-offending more likely. I've had a knife pulled on me, but the kid holding it looked scared and uncomfortable. His accomplice was the problem.

Prisons are required as you need to punish offenders and while rehabilitation should be front and centre of the role of prisons we need knife wielding loons of the streets

I'm not denying the important role prisons play, but any switch to mandatory custodial sentences would need to be carefully considered. I agree with you completely about the need for rehabilitation - With the exception of some highly dangerous psychopaths.

I have carefully considered it along with a number of other factors and believe it’s an important idea in cracking down on knife crime. It’s not the answer but part of it
