Neither will you and your millionaire friends and fellow Shadow Cabinet colleagues. But a No Deal Brexit will lead to LOWER food prices, not higher.https://twitter.com/jeremycorbyn/status/1157536072001343493 …

Not this bollocks again. Does your brain freeze when it faces a fact? The EU has ZERO internal tariffs and the lowest import tariffs IN THE WORLD.pic.twitter.com/FtEDvEc0o2
EU has largest network of *global* FTAs. 87% UK imports are tariff-free because from EU or via this *global* network. Leaving EU means applying tariffs not lowering them! Add loss of pound = bigger shopping bills. If want protectionism, see USA tariff war.https://twitter.com/iwitteronandon/status/1088462075569950720 …
Also, lowering our import tariffs outside of an FTA doesn't stop other countries keeping their tariffs up against our exports. So just cutting tariffs won't lower food prices, will put our farmers out of business, and will leave us without cards to negotiate trade deals.
Which tariffs, precisely? Please give specific examples. Thank you.
Fairtrade Coffee?
That would only affect roasted coffee (not green) from Indonesia and Brazil as far as I can see. https://www.fairtrade.org.uk/~/media/FairtradeUK/Media%20Centre/News/2018/Delivering%20a%20Fairtrade%20Brexit%20Report%20September%202018.pdf …
Except almost all food already comes in under no tariffs from the EU, from our FTA trade partners like South Africa, Israel, Egypt, Morocco, Kenya, Mexico etc.. or from developing countries that have zero tariff market access. Some 90%. There’s very little in it for the consumer.
Moreover, saving the export-oriented part of the economy from the shock of sudden export barriers will require depreciation of the pound. That will inevitably drive up the consumer prices for all imported foods.
Your problem is you don't realise how little we pay on import tariffs outside the EU. Most of the time it's free...
How do you cut a tariff that is currently 0%?
You are clearly ignorant of WTO rules governing the application of tariffs, and the accompanying restrictions. Aren't you, Julia?
Just check: huge numbers of food imports are already zero rated. Check your silliness.
Of course it’s highly unlikely @JuliaHB1 will come back to this. She simply doesn’t understand. She just spouts from the Brexit cliche handbook.
Christ, I have broken light bulbs that are brighter.
1) what’s the weighted average tariff on our food imports under EU regs Julia? 2) how much difference does that make to UK consumers in £ per year, overall? 3) how much has £ devalued since 23/6/16? If you can’t answer these, you haven’t a clue.
The protectionist rules that currently protect our farmers?
When farmers are slaughtering their lambs and burning them in huge pyres tell them how great it will be
You know what I never see on here? People saying “You’re right Julia. An excellent, well researched and important observation there.” If I employed her, I’d be looking for fresh talent right about now.
