Love this. I did bar work for years and frankly was the best training for politics, it taught me to handle difficult and escalating situations, trained me to stay on my feet & to listen for ages to boring speeches and taught me how to handle those who underestimate you.https://twitter.com/ConnieSchultz/status/1145425641766080513 …

I’m sure it was before pressing a button that said ‘rum & coke’ as well. Holding the prices of 15 drinks in your head and adding them as you poured was a real skill. As was scoring darts on a chalk board!

Is it safe to assume that Diane Abbott was never a barmaid ?
-
If she was, I'd like to know where and see if the drinks are still eleventyfive pence a round

Especially before itemised tills. I knew how much to charge as soon as I put the last drink of the customers round in front of them.

Best test for that was working in a shop selling fabric with a price per metre

-
For me definitely bar work in the days when the till couldn’t add up for you!
-
And working in a fabric shop where you had to multiply the length by the per metre cost... mental arithmetic a-go-go!

God, I was like John Nash in A Beautiful Mind when I worked behind a bar in the 90's! When you've a big party coming in and there's that one guy, looks loaded, who is buying the first round of 35 drinks!! And another 6 pints of Foster's please. Another 8 wine spritzers please

Had a girlfriend at 14, bumped into her 16 years later and married her. She was a bar-person, so bars are good for finding a wife also

Waitressing your way through Uni and Law school much more lucrative...... than bar work. The River Cafe was also like foodie finishing school. Ribollita.
