“Culturally offensive”. There are *loads* of similar tweets complaining about the name of a new sodding underwear range by a woman who’s only famous for having a big bum. The world’s gone stark raving mad.https://twitter.com/yukokato1701/status/1143670234647105536 …

Nice underwear, but as a Japanese woman who loves to wear our traditional dress,👘 kimono, I find the naming of your products baffling (since it has no resemblance to kimono), if not outright culturally offensive, especially if it’s merely a word play on your name. Pls reconsider

I think it’s more because she’s trying to trademark the word “kimono” which obviously causes all sorts of problems for Japanese companies who produce actual kimonos. See how it’s not just complaining for the sake of it?

But she’s trying to, which when taken into account indicates a complete lack of consideration for the Japanese culture?

Captain J T Kirk's attempt to launch a lingerie line wasn't too good either. "Shatner Knickers" was doomed from the start.

I think it’s a bit like calling an American chocolate biscuit a ‘Devon Scone’ and then trademarking that name. I hate how cultural appropriation is bandied about but just taking a foreign word, exploiting it and then trademarking it is absurd.

McDonald's from McDonald, is a widely used surname and of course a Scottish clan. Yet the burger chain sued a cafe owner in England for calling it McDonald's. I wonder if they did the same in Scotland how that would have gone down? Anyone with ideas?

I think what’s mad is Kim trying to trademark it, it’s a noun! It’s like a guy called Pete deciding he’s entitled to apply to register Peterborough as trademark, not that I can think of anything you’d want to sell under that name 🤔
