I think since Friday the key divide in this country is no longer Leave/Remain or North/South but between - People who think a late night screaming row between a couple is domestic abuse, and - People who’ve been married.

Oh, you really should. We are ridiculously and gloriously happy after 15 years together, but that’s after a few really hard years early on when, yes, there were some shouting matches. It doesn’t mean a marriage is unhappy. Maybe try being a little less holier than thou.

I've been married 25 years, and our rows never involved words like 'get off me' or 'get out'. My daughter had a friend who was murdered by her boyfriend. So, I'm not being holy, I'm scared by your attempts to suggest that screaming and smashing are normal.

Well, good for you. You two must be saints. There is no evidence that anyone was abused or at risk. If they were, we would all know it by now. A shouting match - even one with smashing plates - is not DV. Unless you think the state should police every couple’s rows now?

No, I think that if a woman's shouting 'get off me', and then not answering her door, then calling the police is normal. I've had rows where I felt so angry I didn't want to be with that person, so I left. Not always possible.

I mean, presumably he could have ended the row there and then by getting out of her flat when she told him to. He chose to remain, ironically enough.

Actually a shouting match and smashing things can be DV. Abusers often like to do scary things to remind you of their strength and thus control you without literally laying hands on you because it's easier to explain away to people who think like you, Julia.

Except it was Carrie Symonds doing the shouting and throwing so are you saying Boris is a victim of domestic violence?

I've no idea what was happening in that particular instance. I was making a general comment in response to a general comment.

I like how your reaction to someone’s daughter being murdered is to berate and mock the grieving parent. It’s like you become a worse human being with every tweet.

This whole thread is full of people saying screaming at each other is not normal behaviour in a marriage, and someone who pretends to be angry for a living saying yes it is. People who don’t scream at each other aren’t saints, they are just nicer than you.

Everyone should watch THE LIVES OF OTHERS - a film about the Stasi in communist East Germany! Everyone faced with the prospect of Corbyn running for office in the UK!
